Tours of duty

  • I spent nine months from September of 1953 through May of 1954 in training at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland. I was assigned as commander of my detachment there, and we were trained in the repair of Sky Sweepers, which were 75 millimeter anti-aircraft artillery guns, each gun with its own self-contained radar unit (a real advanced weapon for that time!).

  • In June of 1954 we were sent to Fort Bliss, Texas to join the anti-aircraft artillery battalion that we were to support. We spent 30 days there while they completed their training.

  • This battalion's mission was to defend Carswell Air Force Base, a Strategic Air Command training base in Fort Worth, Texas. We moved there in July of 1954, where I was stationed until my discharge in June of 1955.
