EVENTS OF THE 50TH
REUNION
|
Friday,
September 17th, 1999
Welcome -
Hospitality Room at Quality Inn - 3 p.m. Snacks & drinks with the
Welcome Committee - catching up with each other since 1994
Homecoming
Football Game at Cardinal Field - 7 p.m. Coldwater vs. Battle
Creek Harper Creek - Honoring the class of '49 - Class
of Champions - at
half time presentations. Over 70 classmates and spouses attended
the game. Here is what was said over the public address system:
"The Coldwater High School Athletic Department would like to
welcome and introduce to you the class of '49, the "class of
champions" celebrating their 50th class reunion this weekend.
The class of '49 was one of the most memorable classes to graduate from
CHS not only for their athletic accomplishments but also for
producing outstanding band performances at regional and state
competitions as well as many other academic achievements throughout the
year. Best know as the class "B" state basketball
champions of 1949 they also captured co-Twin Valley football and
baseball championships as well as many track and field records held for
many years in the TV and state. We will be introducing some of the
championship football team members along with some of the band and other
class members at half time. Please join us in welcoming the class
of 1949."
At halftime,
the 1949 Football team was introduced along with their individual and
team accomplishments. Representing the 1949 Cardinal Marching Band
was Richard Hill, former Drum Major and saxophonist. Representing
the senior cheerleaders was Joan Donkin Legg.
After game
pizza party at the Hospitality Room at Quality Inn. Many thanks to
our hosts: Fred Fredericks and Marvin Rosenberg. Videos of the 49
State Championship Game and the Senior Washington Trip were shown at
various times during the course of the three days. Rollie Thompson
set up a computer so those interested could view the internet site of
our class reunion designed by Gisela Drayton, wife of Kenwood Drayton.
Other local CHS grads from those years surrounding ours were also
invited.

Thanks to Gene
Sowles for setting up a golf outing at The Coldwater Country Club.
It was a beautiful sunny fall day and a great time was had by all
participants, even the hackers.
There were also two
major events in the city - The Historic Home Tour and the Fall Arts
& Craft Festival which provided non-golfers a great opportunity to
get around the community to recall and tour some of the beautiful old
homes as well as participate in the Festival and the many sidewalk sales
sponsored by downtown stores.
Gathering at the
Coldwater Lake Club House for drinks and snacks started in the afternoon
about 2 pm. The traditional pig roast buffet and dinner occurred
at 6 pm. Our Master of Ceremonies was ably performed by Fred
Fredericks. A lot of reminiscing and tons of stories were told.
The highlight of the evening was the appearance and remarks by Coach
Floyd Eby. He and Mrs. Eby joined us for dinner as we celebrated
his 80th birthday. Not only was his great sense of humor intact
but his detailed memory of athletic events and individual player stories
were remarkable. He entered the club to a rousing chorus of the
"Cardinal Fight Song" - Before he sat down he did something
else that characterizes why he is such a great human being. He
went up to every single person - classmates and spouses - shook their
hand and talked with each one and in many cases remembered names and
something about the person.
Many of us went
back to the Quality Inn Headquarters Room for relaxing, card party and
socializing.

September 19th, 1999
A farewell
"gourmet" breakfast was held at the old high school hangout -
Harry's (now Irma's) prepared by famous Chefs Jack Woods and Fred
Fredricks. The Chefs lived up to their reputation - the food was
excellent and the atmosphere reminiscent. Goodbyes and "see
you in 5", hugs and handshakes characterized this "Class of
Champions."

Thanks to our
Committee
It takes a lot of
organizational ability to put on such a class three-day event, so our
hearty applause goes to the following folks:
Our Late Leader and
Chairwoman - Pat Kaser Trumbull
Her Helpers: Marvin
Rosenberg, Fred Fredericks, Freda Early Lewis, Joyce Carls McCurley,
Gene Sowles, Rollie Thompson
It takes money and
time to do the special events that we, as classmates, are privileged to
experience. We should recognize those special contributions by
Marvin Rosenberg, Fred Fredericks and Jack Wood.
